How to Communicate Well with Children
During a child's growth and development, more than just materials and nutrients are required. The involvement of parents and two-way communication is also essential. Hence, the topic of building communication with children is a crucial one for both mothers and fathers to comprehend.
There are several things that parents need to know in relation to how to build good and appropriate communication with children. On this occasion we will share the information for you!
1. Provide some time
The key for parents to establish communication with their children is to make time. It's essential to offer the time that the child needs to the best of one's ability. Parents should ensure that their children are not left unable to communicate due to a lack of parental availability.
For parents who are busy with work, it's important to dedicate time on Saturdays and Sundays or during vacations to converse with their children. Utilize the available time to share stories and foster effective communication with them.
2. Talk to your child before bed
For parents who are really busy and even have holidays to work, for example, make sure you can take the time to talk to your child at the moment before bed.
There's no necessity for extensive dialogue; simple acts like hugging or reading a bedtime story can convey parental care effectively. These gestures can also serve as a potent means for busy parents to foster communication with their children.
3. Maximize body language
Body language is the biggest contributor to establishing effective communication with children. Body language can also show your child that you're talking to him and that he or she should listen.
If the child and parent are sitting together, look them in the eye when you are about to start talking. Or if the parent is standing, you can duck or squat down to the level of the child and start talking.
These ways can make the child understand that he is talking, and he must listen when his parents are talking.
4. Listen to him talk
It is not always the parents who have to want to talk, sometimes the child also wants to talk about what he is experiencing, how his school is, what his friends are like, about his complaints and others.
Therefore, parents should not only want to be listened to, but also learn to listen. Listen to what your child says or tells you and start responding to it.
5. Give feedback if you feel it's necessary
If your child tells you about his complaints and shows that he wants feedback in the form of input, don't hesitate to give feedback as a form of direction to him.
Convey your feedback well – either with anger or things that make your child afraid to talk to you. Show him that you are welcome as a parent and at the same time a sharing friend to him.
6. Avoid getting angry
Did the child make a mistake? Don't get angry just yet. You have to understand that mistakes are natural to do.
The solution, let him know that his actions were wrong and communicate them. Restart communication that may have been previously unfavorable with your child. Tell him that you understand his difficulties and his position and help him get out of the problem by providing a good solution.
Also avoid too much helping, handling and interfering because it will only make the child spoiled. Make sure you are a parent who provides solutions to your child but still allows your child to grow up well so that later he can become a responsible and reliable child.
7. Repeat if your children do not understand
Parents must recognize that children are growing and learning. As adults, we sometimes underestimate or encounter things we don't understand, despite being over a quarter or even half a century old. How much more so for children who are only just beginning to explore the world?
Therefore, if the child does not understand what the parents say when speaking, don't get emotional first. Repeat until the child understands and express your point in simple language.
Those are some of the ways to build communication with children that parents should do. Make a good bonding by means of two-way communication to make your child comfortable telling stories with you.
